If you follow local cycling apparel maker/cycling club, PLAN A on social media, you must have surely seen that they were recently holding try outs for a youth team. The information about this ended exactly there and nothing else was said about what they were up to. But at their Hari Raya gathering, all was unveiled and what a reveal it was.

This was where they announced that they have assembled a cycling outfit, called the Kencana-PLAN A racing team. On the surface it looked like it was just a launch of their team, but it actually went deeper than that.

Labelled as a “development project” the Kencana-PLAN A team is more than just assembling riders like you would a boy band and calling them a race team. It came with some really interesting attachments.

Firstly, if you do not know, our pocket rocket hero Azizulhasni Awang has this initiative called “Team Azizul” where he picks up youth riders with great potential and guides them through the world of competitive cycling. Kencana-PLAN A announced that they have been appointed as a feeder team to Team Azizul which is a big achievement. It was confirmed by Azizul himself through a showing of a recorded video by him at PLAN A’s hari raya gathering.

Secondly, through the support of Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor, eligible riders will get full scholarships for skills training programmes (vocational & technical) to prepare them for life after cycling if they choose later not to pursue it.

According to Kencana-PLAN A Team Principal Izhar Moslim, this move was to ensure the youths have something to fall back on later on in life. “We have seen too many young riders leave the cycling world with no skills and nothing to fall back on. This is not something we want to see at Kencana-PLAN A and we want to make sure that we have given everything we can give to these youths who are part of our family,” said the charismatic team principal.

The final announcement was that PLAN A will be setting up an academy, to help more youths who want try and forge a path into the world of professional cycling. “We will concentrate now on the current riders that we have, but perhaps six months down the road we will start to open up our academy for new intake,” said Faz Adhili, who is also taking on the role of Kencana-PLAN A Team Manager.

Faz Adhili and Izhar Moslim are the driving force behind Malaysia’s number one local cycling apparel maker, PLAN A. It has always been their shared dream to setup this type of cyclist habitat, which includes a race team that comes from the grassroots level.

Through the support of Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, who is an avid cyclist as well as director of Kencana Capital, this vision has finally come true for them. The duo confirmed that the Kencana-PLAN A initiative would not be possible without Tan Sri Mokhzani, who was also one of the masterminds of the project. He is also very passionate about developing the younger generation and hopes to see the riders succeed not just in cycling but in life as well.

The academy will also be collaborating with Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor for the skills training programme as they have an affiliation with 50 public and private institutions.

This includes Selangor Human Resource Development Corporation, Institut Latihan Kemahiran Belia dan Sukan, Kolej Komuniti, Next Academy and more.
